But. Yuki here. We were able to proceed with publishing this "Seiken Densetsu" art book since Square have given their consent. I feel like "the man in the tall castle" has finally been able to finish his task and go where he needed to go. (Laughs)
It could be that this will turn out just like the "X" book, where the first approach will end up being the final one, but since the designer Mr. Hazama has also expressed interest in contributing, it'll probably turn out to be a good book in any case. Nice meeting you all. Later.

基本的にパーツはスクウェアさんのデザインの通りですね。いずれのキャラ
もそうなんですが、ポクの手に来る前に中味はもう先行して進んでましたから。
盾位かな勝手に持たせたのは。当時あまりピンと来ないキャラだった割に、
今見ると結構良いと思う。自分のプレイでは2回とも使わなかったケド。（笑)

LIGHT CLASS - PALADIN

クラスチェンジイラストに於いて、武器は全て高橋政輝氏のデザインを使
っています,他はほぼオリジナルかな。基本のキャラにピンと来なかった分
自分の中の「ナイト」像をまんま描いている気がする,スクウェア側の希
望としては、全てのクラスを描いて欲しいとの事でしたが、さすがに数が多
すぎる事と、「パラデイン」と「ロード」等の違いがゲームをやらないポクに
は良く分からなかった事もあり（未だに良く分からないが’）、この様な形に
なったのでした

DARK CLASS - DUELIST

「聖剣」における最大の謎であるこの「閤Iのクラス，どうにもピンと来な
い設定だったせいもあり、非常に悩んだ憶えがあります.つまりは.悪度的
な風貌でありながら悪役に見えてはいけないという事で、当時の「やりにくさ一
が如実に絵に出ている気がする好きになれない一枚-

On apprend ainsi que le design de Duran avait déjà été décidé à l’avance par Squaresoft, et que Yūki s’est contenté de n’apporter que quelques petits ajouts ; que pour Kevin le plus difficile fut l’utilisation des couleurs bleu et jaune dans son costume sans que cela ne donne un résultat trop mauvais ; que Hawk Eye devait originellement avoir les cheveux gris, mais que lors de l’impression d’une illustration les cheveux sont ressortis avec une couleur tirant plus vers le violet et que du coup, c’est cette couleur qui a été gardée ; que Angela est le personnage féminin préféré de Nobuteru Yūki ; que pour Charlotte il a eu du mal à se décider pour son design final ; et enfin que Riesz fut l’exemple parfait du genre de personnage féminin qu’il n’avait pas du tout l’habitude de dessiner. On apprend aussi que Seiken Densetsu 3 fut également le tout premier RPG auquel Nobuteru Yūki aura joué.

Duran

Basically, [he was assembled from] parts in accordance with Square's design. Several other characters were like that too, with their particulars already being settled before they came to my desk. I did decide on my own to give him a shield, though. At the time, he didn't seem like a very interesting character to me, but looking back at it now, I think he turned out okay after all. That said, I've never used him more than once in my own playthroughs of the game. (Smile)

LIGHT CLASS - PALADIN

All the weapons he uses in his class change illustrations were designed by Mr. Masaki [?] Takahashi. Everything else is more or less original. Even if I didn't care too much for [Duran] as a base character, I feel like I was fairly successful in depicting my personal image of a "Knight". Square wanted me to draw every single class, but since there were far too many of them, it was hard sometimes for someone like me who doesn't play games very much to tell the difference between "Paladin", "Lord" and so on (and I'm still not really clear on that). So that's why it turned out the way it did.

DARK CLASS - DUELIST

This "Dark" class is one of the great mysteries of "Seiken" [Densetsu 3]. It just wouldn't turn out well at all, and I remember worrying about it quite a bit. It had to have a devilish appearance without also coming across as a villain, and I think the "difficulty of pulling that off" really came through in the drawing. It's one drawing I don't care much for.

Kevin

う一ん、いかにも「グラップラー」なポーズ（笑）ケヴィン全体に言える事な
んですが、服の青と黄のシマシマが大変にじむんですよ、カラーインクは，
色の相性にもよるケド最悪でしたよケヴィンは：（笑）

LIGHT CLASS - GODHAND

もう完全に悪役地獄の貴公子ってカンジ（笑）「ゴットハンド」の熱血
なカンジと正反対のクールなカンジで作ってます斜めフカンと手を手前
に突き出すポーズはポクの最も描きやすいポーズの一つ

DARK CLASS - DEATHHAND

イメージカラーは赤でも黄色の逆立つ髪と胴着はまるで「ドラゴンボール」：
いや「スト丨丨」のケンか.‘‘いずれにしても「格閫」キャラのスタンダード
は空手着なのね，日本人だなあ（笑）

Yep, that's a "Grappler" pose, all right. (Smile)
This really goes for Kevin in general, but those blue and yellow stripes on his clothing were quite a challenge. The color ink was [always] blurring. Kevin was also pretty bad in terms of color compatibility. (Smile)

LIGHT CLASS - GOD HAND

The "image color" here is red. But the eye-catching yellow hair and the suit brings "Dragon Ball" to mind. Or "SF2"'s Ken, maybe...in any case, I guess the karate uniform is the standard for "hand-to-hand" characters. Probably since we're Japanese and all. (Smile)

DARK CLASS - DEATH HAND

It's just a total villain. Kind of like the Prince of Hell. (Smile)*
I set out to give it a colder feel, as a polar opposite of the hot-blooded "God Hand". His pose, striking out aggressively with his hands in front of him, is one of those poses it's easy for me to draw.

*This might be a reference to the Dark Prince, since it's close to his Japanese name, but not exactly the same.

RIESZ
いいですよね、リースって健気で（笑）ポクがあまり描かないタイプのキヤ
ラなので特にそう思うのかもこういうムードの絵になぅたのは、やはりストー
リーから来るイメージからたと思いますアマゾネスじやないよな〜これは（笑)

LIGHT CLASS - VANADIS
リースの元々のイメージを突き詰めた惑しみーズにもそれが現れてますね
「ヴァナディ“ス」って何の事やら分からなかったので、ミドルクラスの「ワ
ルギューレ」のイメージを元に造ってますス卜;

DARK CLASS - FENRIR KNIGHT
これは高橋氏とポクとでたいぶやりとりがあったキャラですね多分、ラフも
収録されてると思うのでそちらを見てもらうと分かると思います最初は全
然違うコスチュームでしたが、それに高橋氏のアイデアで頭の付いた狼の
毛皮にしようという事になり、それをまたホクがアレンジして生きた毛皮を
鎖でつないでいるといづた形に落ち着きました

LISE

Lise is great, isn't she, being so gallant and all. (Smile)
I don't get to draw this type of character very often, so maybe that influences my view of her too. I feel like the mood of the drawing definitely came as a result of the story. Really quite the amazoness, this one. (Smile)

LIGHT CLASS - VANADIES

I feel like it follows naturally from Lise's original image, and the same goes for her pose. I didn't really know what exactly a "Vanadies" was supposed to be, so I based it on the transitional class, "Valkyrie". Her stockings...they have some feeling to them. (Smile)

DARK CLASS - FENRIR KNIGHT

I think the rough sketches for it are included [in the book] too, so you'll probably understand [that it was a collaboration] when you look at them. In the beginning, she had a totally different costume, but Mr. Takahashi had the idea to put a wolf pelt on her head, and then I turned that into a living wolf pelt that wouldn't be tied to her, ending up with the final form.

ANGELA

秘かにマイフェイバリットキャラ，（笑）この娘抜きにはポクの「聖剣」は語

“な魅力とすれば、アンジェラは正にマイ.スタンダードなわけです

LIGHT CLASS - GRANDIVINA
これも光は赤で闇は緑といった補色の関係で作ってますね賢者といゥた
イメ一ジは地味になりがちですが、そこはそれアンジェラですから派手でも
OKってカンジです。

DARK CLASS - MAGUS
ポクにとってのアンジェラはこのクラス。プレイもこのクラズにチェンジしま
した。やはりアンジェラの性格を考えるとこちらかな“‘と魔術師ってやづ
ぱ禁呪に手を出すのがセオリーでしよ？（笑）それに必殺技の「ホットショ
ッ卜]も気持ちいいっス。

ANGELA

Between us, she's my favorite character. (Smile)
As far as I'm concerned, it isn't really "Seiken" without her. She was the first main character I ever played as in an RPG, after all. (Smile)
(I'm probably going to get some comments for this saying how that doesn't come as a surprise...)
Lise might have a kind of irregular charm to her, but Angela is more my type.

LIGHT CLASS - GRAND DIVINA

This is another [character] I gave a color scheme with Light being red and Dark being green. Sage-like characters have a tendency to be pretty plain, but since this is Angela we're talking about, I figured it'd be okay to make her a bit more flashy.

DARK CLASS - MAGUS

When I personally think of Angela, I see her as this class. It's also the class I changed her into when I played the game. It definitely fits well when you consider Angela's personality...or so I'd say. That's my theory, with her being a mage and getting her hands on forbidden spells. (Smile)
I'm also fond of her special attack, "Hotshot".

HAWKEYE

本来、ホーク+イは銀髮なのたそうだが、もらったデザインのプリントが紫
色(強く出すぎたんですな）だった為にこうなってしまった.直すという話も
出たケド、結局このまま行く事になゥた。

Light Class - Wanderer

《可か耳にするたび嫌われているこのワンダラー」のデザインだケド-…、
個人的にはすごぐ気に入っている；薔薇をくわえているのがダメたつたん
せろ一かン（笑)あと髮が基本キャラより薄し、のは先に書かれた理由による
こちらが本来の色のイメージづて事です

Dark Class - Nightblade

棒めてポクらレいデザインの一枚たた、絵的な指定は無かったものの、
仮面の下の顔を見せる為に悩んだ憶えか.“‘今見ると「バルログ」っぼ
い気もする

HAWK

Hawk was originally supposed to have silver hair, but his hair was purple in the design print I received (and it was probably a bit too pronounced too), so that's what he ended up with. There was some talk about fixing it, but we eventually decided to go with it as it was.

LIGHT CLASS - WANDERER

Whenever it's brought up, I always hear negative things about this "Wanderer" design...but personally, I rather like it. That said, it probably wasn't such a good idea to add the roses. (Smile)
His hair color is also less bright compared to the base character, due to what I mentioned earlier. It's more in line with the color I originally imagined.

DARK CLASS - NIGHTBLADE

This design is very much my style. Even though I didn't have to follow any specifications for the drawing, I remember worrying about making the face visible beneath the mask. Looking at it now, it gives me a "Balrog" kind of feel.

CHARLOTTE

正直な話一番ピンと来なかったキャラいや、いくらパ一フェルフって長生
きっても赤ん坊はないたろって（笑）まあ、それもフレイ前の話ですケドね
何といってもバーティには欠かせない回復役しかも、そのロの悪さと技の
ユニークさにぞつこんまいりましたってカンジ丨はりせんチョッフ最高（笑)

LIGHT CLASS - BISHOP

聖職者の上級職という事で金パーツを多くしてます金の貫頭衣の下は
白のノースリーブのワンヒースで下にシャツとお揃いのタイツです頭身が
高いのは先に畲いた理由により、少しでも頭身を上けたかったから

DARK CLASS - EVILSHAMAN

ちびデビルつてカンシシャルロットは性格的にこちらの方が向いている力
モ（笑）黒いマントの様に見えるが'こちらもよく見ると貫頭衣なのです

CARLIE

To be honest, she was the character I had the hardest time getting a clear idea of. Or rather, she's a half-elf, and they live such a long time, so she's kind of just a baby, isn't she? (Smile)
But that was what I thought before I actually played the game, since her healing is indispensable no matter what party you're using. So I did my very best to convey her rough way of speaking and the uniqueness of her skills, like the ultimate "harisen chop". (Smile)

LIGHT CLASS - BISHOP

A "bishop" is someone high up in the hierarchy of the clergy, so I used a lot of gold for this class. Underneath her golden frock, she's wearing a white, sleeveless one-piece, and underneath that, a matching shirt and tights. For reasons I've already written about, she has a high head-to-body ratio, but I wanted to make it a little bit higher still.

DARK CLASS - EVIL SHAMAN

This one has a bit of a "chibi-devil" feel to it. I guess that fits Carlie's personality. (Smile)
It might look like she's wearing a black cloak, but if you look closely, you'll see it's a frock here too.

Isabella

う一ん、末弥さんゴメンなさいってカンジです。もう。「WIZ」の「Royal Lady」ですよね、これって。
発注時のデザイン画のまんまイラストにしたら、後に 「WIZ」 関連の仕事をする事になり、その時
判明「ちょっとそれは無いだろう」って思いました。自分の勉強不足もありますが.“'すいません
です。卜ホホ。

Deathjester

確かこれもほとんど発注時のデザイン通り…と思う。なかなか格好良ぐよらず、苦労した憶えが
ある割にはゲーム中ではおもいっきり情け無い奴だったのでガックリ来ました。


Koren

ポクの彳吏っているカラーインクは「ルマ」ですが、この赤系の濃い色がものすごく厄介なのです,
すぐダマになるし、色のノビも良くない，褪色が激しい事も分かりました。しかし、それでもポクは「ル
マ」を便い続けるでしょう。それはポクがこの「ルマ」の深い色合いに魅せられているからに他な
りません，

Booskaboo

上のブーちゃんはポクですが、下の2点は当時のアシスト漉澤クンの着彩によるもの。あとメイン
キャラのストーリーイラスト（背景の付いたもの）の背景部分も彼によるペンです。折角細かく描
いた線がポクの厚塗りでガンガン消えていくので、彼は少々悲しそうでした（笑）。ゴメンね

Flammy

う〜ん、カラーインクって気を付けないとすぐ濃くなっちやうんですヨ。だから、フラミーがみんなの
知ってるフラミーよりもほんの少し黄色かったとしても、笑って許してやって下さい。（笑）

Fairy & Spirits

8精霊は全て前作の九月姫さんのデザインですね。激ラブリーです。（笑）この手のキヤラはあま
り描く機会がないので楽しんで描けました。妖精さんが裸なのは「リー」と「フロウド」の影響か
もしれない。（笑）

Bigieu/Isabella

Hmm, this one kind of makes me feel apologetic towards Mr./Ms. Suemi. She's very similar to the "Royal Lady" from "WIZ". I made some illustrations I liked when I received the order, and later, when I ended up working on "WIZ", I realized the resemblance. I remember thinking, "Huh, really?". It's my own fault for not doing my research properly, so I apologize for that. Heh heh.

Deathjester

This one also ended up pretty much in line with my initial design...I think. I remember struggling quite a bit to find a good feel for him, and after that I was disappointed to see that he was such a deplorable character in the actual game.

Crimson Wizard/Koren

I use "ruma" type color ink, so it was really annoying to work with this kind of deep red color. I'd get lumps in the ink, and the color wouldn't spread properly. I also learned the color would fade very quickly. But I spite of all that, I continue to use "ruma" ink. That's purely because I've been charmed by the "ruma"'s deep hues, nothing else.

Booskaboo

I created little Boo's upper body, but it was Shibuzawa, my assistant at the time, who drew the two lower parts. The backgrounds in the main characters' story illustrations (the ones that have backgrounds, that is) also sprang from his/her pen. All his/her painstakingly drawn lines would always disappear underneath my thick paint, so I think he/she was a bit sad because of that. (Smile)

Flammie

Hmm, I had to be careful with the color ink here, otherwise the color would end up too pronounced. Even so, I managed to make her a bit more yellow than the Flammie you all know and love, and you have my permission to go ahead and laugh at that. (Smile)

Fairy & Mana Spirits

All eight Mana spirits still use the same designs Ms. Hime Kugatsu* made for the previous game. They're absolutely lovely. (Smile)
I rarely get the chance to draw characters this way, so I enjoyed it. Making the fairy naked might have been due to the influence of "Lee" and "Froudo". (Smile)
